Kyouya is, above all, cool, calculating, and intelligent. He's not averse to helping out other students, provided those other students can do something for him in return. He is rarely outright antagonistic (he's usually much more subtle), but the concerns of others are simply not as important as his own goals.

Kyouya's family has a long history of pureblooded, wealthy, generally Very Important People in the Wizarding World. They have been directly involved in the development of healing magic over the past hundred years, as well as having a hand in the management of St. Mungo's and connections with the Ministry. Even as the fourth child of such a family, Kyouya knows he is in good standing in the world, as far as influence and connections (and inheritance) go. But as far as he’s concerned, that isn’t enough. He's got ideas that will turn the Wizarding World on its head (in a good way, of course, of course). And if it nets him a pretty sum in the process (which, he is assured, it will), so much the better. Being wealthy and notable because one comes from a wealthy and notable family is all well and good for now, but Kyouya won't be satisfied until he can credit every galleon and every scrap of fame to his own mind, his own wand, and his own two hands, and his having come from a powerful family is merely an introductory paragraph in his biography (and mentioned nowhere on his chocolate frog card).
